Why Proper Care Matters for Recycled Fabrics
Njálla leggings and tops are made mostly from recycled polyester and spandex — materials that took energy and resources to reclaim and respin into new yarn. Washing them the right way protects your investment and keeps the fabric performing (stretch, moisture-wicking, color) for years, which is itself a form of sustainability: the longer a garment lasts, the smaller its footprint per wear.
Wash Cold, Wash Gentle
Turn leggings and tops inside out before washing to protect prints and reduce friction on the outer surface. Use a cold-water, gentle cycle: hot water and vigorous agitation break down elastane fibers over time, which is why leggings gradually lose their snap and start to sag at the knees. A mesh laundry bag adds extra protection, especially if you’re washing with items that have zippers or velcro.
Skip the Fabric Softener
Fabric softener feels tempting, but it coats synthetic fibers with a residue that blocks moisture-wicking and reduces breathability — exactly the performance qualities you’re paying for. A mild, residue-free detergent (ideally one formulated for sports or synthetic fabrics) cleans without dulling the fabric’s technical properties.
Air Dry, Always
Tumble drying is the fastest way to shorten the life of stretch fabric. Heat breaks down elastane and can warp the fit permanently. Lay leggings and tops flat or hang them to air dry instead — it takes longer, but it’s the single biggest thing you can do to keep your Njálla pieces fitting the way they did on day one. Avoid drying directly in strong sun for long periods, since UV exposure gradually fades printed patterns like our nature-inspired designs.
How Often Should You Wash?
A simple rule: wash after every sweaty session, but let a lightly worn piece air out and wear it again before tossing it in the laundry. Washing less often — without compromising hygiene — also reduces microplastic shedding from synthetic fabrics into wastewater, an added environmental benefit.
Quick Care Checklist
Turn inside out, wash cold on a gentle cycle, skip the fabric softener, and always air dry. Small habits, but they add years to a garment that was made to last in the first place.
