Merino Wool vs. Recycled Synthetics: Which Wins in Cold-Weather Layering?

How Each Fabric Handles Warmth

Merino wool fibers are naturally crimped, trapping tiny pockets of air that insulate even when the fibers are damp — which is why wool stays warm in a way that wet synthetic fabric doesn’t. Recycled synthetics like the recycled polyester Njálla uses in its leggings rely on trapped air within the knit structure itself rather than the fiber, and they insulate best when dry.

Moisture: Two Different Strategies

Merino wool absorbs moisture vapor into the fiber itself, releasing it gradually and preventing that clammy, sweat-soaked feeling — though it takes longer to dry once truly wet. Recycled synthetics move liquid sweat away from the skin fast and dry quickly, which is why they’re the better choice for high-intensity movement like a vigorous flow or a run in the cold, where you’re producing sweat continuously.

Where Each One Shines

Merino performs best for lower-intensity, stop-start activity — walking to your yoga class in freezing temperatures, or the stillness between poses — where its steady insulation and odor resistance matter more than fast drying. Recycled synthetic leggings and tops perform best once you’re moving hard: a fast vinyasa sequence, an outdoor run, or any session where sweat output is high and quick-drying performance keeps you comfortable.

Sustainability Considerations

Merino wool is a renewable, biodegradable fiber, but conventional wool production carries its own land-use and animal-welfare considerations depending on the farm. Recycled synthetics like Njálla’s recycled polyester divert plastic waste from landfill and require less water than producing new synthetic fiber from scratch, but they do shed microplastic fibers during washing — using a wash bag or filter helps reduce this.

Layering the Two Together

You don’t have to pick one forever. A merino base layer under a recycled-synthetic Njálla top gives you wool’s steady warmth next to skin with the synthetic layer’s quick-drying performance on top — a combination many Nordic outdoor practitioners use through the coldest months.
