The Story Behind Njálla: A Finnish Sustainable Clothing Brand

Every piece of clothing we make starts from the same four ideas: health, wellness, art, and nature. It’s a simple phrase, but it shapes every decision behind Njálla — from the fabric we choose to the prints we design to the sizes we offer. Here’s the story of how that came together, and what it actually means in practice.

Rooted in Finnish Nature

Njálla is a Finnish clothing brand, and that’s not just a detail on an “About Us” page — it’s the starting point for our entire design process. The name itself, Njálla, comes from the Sámi word for naali — the Arctic fox, a small, resilient animal built to survive the harshest conditions of the north. The Arctic fox is now critically endangered, and it’s precisely that resilience and fragility that inspires our brand: values we’ve tried to carry into how we design and produce clothing.

Our prints draw directly from that landscape: the silver bark of birch forests, the deep quiet of the polar night, snow-covered willow branches, the stillness of Nordic lakes at dusk. Every design starts as original, hand-drawn or hand-painted art before it’s adapted into a wearable print — a process that ties each garment back to a real place, not a generic pattern.

Health and Wellness, Not Just Performance

We make activewear, but we think about it through a wellness lens first, not just a performance one. That means prioritizing genuine comfort — fabric that feels good against your skin, seams that don’t dig in, a fit that supports rather than restricts — because how your clothing feels directly affects how you feel moving in it, whether that’s a yoga class, a walk, or simply your everyday routine.

Ethical Production and Ecological Materials

Our leggings, tops, and bra tops are made from roughly 73% recycled polyester and spandex, turning existing plastic waste into wearable, durable clothing rather than relying on virgin fossil resources. Our organic tops blend bamboo and organic cotton for a softer, breathable feel. Both ethical production conditions and the ecological materials we use are verified through certifications granted by independent third parties — because sustainability claims should be backed by something concrete, not just a label.

Art as a Sustainability Choice, Not Just a Style Choice

We could license generic prints from a stock catalogue and update them every season to chase trends. We don’t, on purpose. Original, hand-designed art takes real time to create, which naturally slows down our design cycle and keeps our collections smaller and more intentional — closer to slow fashion than fast fashion, by design rather than accident.

Inclusive by Design

We make our pieces in sizes XS through XXL, because we believe sustainable, wellness-focused activewear should be available to everybody who wants to move in it — not just a narrow slice of body types. Fit and comfort shouldn’t be a privilege reserved for a limited size range.

Where This All Comes Together

Health, wellness, art, and nature aren’t separate marketing pillars for us — they’re genuinely connected. Nature inspires the art. The art becomes fabric made from recycled, ecological materials. That fabric is built for comfort and durability, supporting how you actually feel moving your body. And the whole process is meant to be one you can trust, from a brand willing to explain every part of it.

If that story resonates with you, explore our collection and find the piece that fits your own practice — wherever it takes you.
