Buying sustainable leggings is only half the equation — how you wash, dry, and store them determines whether they last two years or twenty washes. Recycled and stretch fabrics need slightly different care than a plain cotton t-shirt, and getting it right makes a real difference. Here’s a practical guide.
Wash Cold, Always
Hot water breaks down spandex fibers faster, causing leggings to lose their stretch and recovery over time. Washing on a cold cycle (30°C or below) protects the elastane, uses less energy per wash, and helps colors and prints stay vibrant for longer — especially important for detailed, hand-designed prints.
Turn Them Inside Out
Turning leggings inside out before washing protects the printed or outer surface from friction against the drum and other garments, reducing pilling and fading. It’s a thirty-second habit that meaningfully extends how long prints stay crisp and vibrant.
Skip the Fabric Softener
Fabric softener might seem like a good idea for anything you wear against your skin, but it actually coats synthetic and stretch fibers with a residue that reduces moisture-wicking performance and can degrade elastane over time. For activewear, a mild, residue-free detergent is a better choice than a softener-included formula.
Use a Mesh Laundry Bag
A mesh wash bag does two things: it reduces friction and snagging against zippers or rougher fabrics in the same load, and it helps contain the microplastic fibers that synthetic fabrics shed during washing — a small step that reduces how much ends up in waterways.
Air Dry Instead of Tumble Drying
High heat from a tumble dryer is one of the fastest ways to break down spandex and shorten a garment’s lifespan. Air drying — laid flat or hung — takes a little longer but protects both the elastane and the print, and uses no extra energy in the process. If you’re short on time, a low-heat, short cycle is a reasonable compromise, but full high-heat drying should be avoided wherever possible.
Wash Less Often Than You Think
Not every wear requires a wash. Unless leggings are visibly dirty or you’ve had a particularly sweaty session, airing them out between wears is often enough. Washing less frequently reduces fiber shedding, saves water and energy, and extends the life of the elastic fibers — all genuine sustainability wins, not just a shortcut.
Storage Matters Too
Folding leggings instead of hanging them prevents waistband stretching over time. Keep them away from direct sunlight during storage, which can fade prints and weaken fibers, and avoid stuffing them into overly tight drawers where fabric gets permanently creased.
A Quick Care Checklist
- Wash cold (30°C or below)
- Turn inside out before washing
- Skip fabric softener
- Use a mesh wash bag when possible
- Air dry instead of tumble drying
- Wash only when genuinely needed
- Fold, don’t hang, for storage
Why This Matters for Njálla Leggings
Our leggings are made from roughly 73% recycled polyester and spandex, with hand-designed prints inspired by Nordic nature — pieces that are meant to be worn for years, not one season. Proper care keeps the fabric’s four-way stretch and squat-proof opacity intact, and protects the artwork on every print so it stays as vivid as the day you bought it.
Take care of what you already own, and when you’re ready for your next piece, explore our collection — built to last, if you treat it right.
