How to Use a Yoga Strap: 5 Stretches That Actually Work

A yoga strap is one of the simplest, most underrated props in a home yoga practice. It’s just a long strip of fabric or webbing — but used well, it extends your reach, protects your joints, and makes deep stretches accessible long before your body is flexible enough to do them unassisted.

Why bother with a strap?

Most people skip straps because they assume props are only for beginners. In reality, a strap lets you hold a stretch with better alignment for longer, rather than straining to physically reach your foot or hand and losing form in the process. It’s not a shortcut — it’s a way to practice the pose correctly while your flexibility catches up.

5 stretches to try with a strap

  • Seated forward fold (Paschimottanasana): Loop the strap around the balls of your feet and hold one end in each hand. Sit tall, hinge from the hips, and let the strap do the reaching so your spine stays long instead of rounding.
  • Reclining hand-to-big-toe pose (Supta Padangusthasana): Lie on your back, loop the strap around one foot, and extend that leg toward the ceiling. This is one of the most common ways to use a strap, and it’s genuinely effective for hamstring tightness.
  • Shoulder and chest opener: Hold the strap with both hands, wider than shoulder-width, and slowly lift it overhead and behind you. Widen your grip if your shoulders feel tight — the strap should never force a painful range of motion.
  • Cow face pose arms (Gomukhasana): If your hands can’t clasp behind your back, hold the strap between them instead. Walk your hands closer together over time as your shoulder mobility improves.
  • Bridge pose leg support: In bridge pose, loop the strap around your thighs, just above the knees, and press outward against it. This keeps your knees from splaying and helps you feel proper alignment through your hips.

A quick note on technique

The strap should create gentle resistance, not pain. If you feel sharp discomfort, give yourself more slack. The goal is consistency — a few minutes with a strap, a few times a week, tends to do more for flexibility than occasionally forcing a deeper stretch without one.

Whatever prop you’re reaching for, what you’re wearing matters just as much. Fabric that restricts your hips or pulls tight through the seams will fight you in every stretch. Our leggings are built with four-way stretch and minimal seams, so they move with you through the full range of every pose — strap included.
