You wash a polyester top the same way you wash everything else, and it still comes out of the machine smelling faintly off \u2014 sometimes worse than before it went in. What the research actually found<\/h2>\n

A study published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology collected shirts from participants after an intensive hour-long exercise session and analyzed the bacteria that grew on them, then had a trained odor panel assess the smell. The result: polyester shirts smelled significantly more unpleasant and intense than cotton shirts worn during the same session by the same people. The bacteria responsible \u2014 micrococci, one of the main culprits behind rank sweat odor \u2014 were isolated almost exclusively on the synthetic shirts.<\/p>\n

Why polyester specifically holds onto odor<\/h2>\n

Two properties of polyester combine to create the problem. First, it’s hydrophobic \u2014 it repels water rather than absorbing it, so sweat sits on the surface and between fibers instead of soaking in and evaporating the way it does with cotton. Second, it’s oleophilic, meaning it attracts the oils and sebum that odor-causing bacteria feed on. On top of that, synthetic fiber has a rougher microscopic surface than cotton, with tiny pits and grooves where bacteria can embed themselves \u2014 and ordinary washing often isn’t enough to dislodge them.<\/p>\n

A standard wash cycle removes visible dirt and most surface bacteria, but the bacteria lodged in those microscopic fiber grooves can survive a normal cold or warm wash. Over repeated wear-and-wash cycles, bacteria can build up in the fabric structure faster than washing removes them, which is why a polyester piece can start smelling faintly “off” straight out of the dryer, even when it looks and feels clean.<\/p>\n
